Course Description:
This one-day workshop will provide you with the tools and techniques necessary to begin the journey of “Writing Your Life Story.” The workshop will include a discussion of what constitutes a memoir or life story. We will discuss the compelling elements that will keep your reader turning the page in anticipation of what will happen next. We will analyze a number of excerpts from various best-selling memoirs – the authors will be varied by age, ethnic background and the subjects that they are addressing. The workshop will also include short writing assignments to be completed in class, as well as a take-home assignment. Each participant will receive a detailed handout that will include recommended reading – books on memoir writing and memoirs and life stories that merit your time
The workshop is designed for the beginning writer as well as for those students who have had some experience in any one of a number of genres of writing (poetry, fiction, short story, screenplay). It is our intention to create a supportive atmosphere with positive feedback from workshop participants that will inspire you to move ahead in your writing practice.
Participants should bring a notebook, papers and pen/pencil or personal laptop computers.
