Rocío Jesús Rendón Castañeda
For the past several years, Peruvian artist, Rocío Rendón Castañeda, has created a series of mixed-media works titled, Scratch and Win, Recreational Series in Liquidation. Based on the concept of the lottery game known in Peru as “scratch and win,” the series investigates the themes of desire, faith and luck. This work of art is a silkscreen mounted on wood, painted over with a grey non-stick, scratch-off paint. The image below the grey paint is not revealed until the public viewer scratches the surface, like scratching a phone card or game card, to reveal the various images of good and bad luck charms and related mass-media icons. The process builds the viewers expectation of “winning” something special, to get “lucky,” thus, fulfilling their dreams and desires.

En los últimos años la artista peruana, Rocío Rendón Castañeda, ha combinado técnicas gráficas y pintura para crear una serie de imágenes en técnica mixta tituladas, Raspa y Gana, Serie Recreacional en Liquidación. Basada en el concepto del juego de lotería conocido en Perú como “raspa y gana”, esta serie investiga los temas de deseo, la fe y la suerte. Esta obra, ganadora del premio de pintura y obras bidimensionales en técnica mixta en los Premios MOLAA 08, es una serigrafía montada sobre madera que ha sido pintada con pintura gris no adherente que se puede raspar. La imagen de debajo de la pintura gris no se ve hasta que el espectador raspa la superficie, como raspando una tarjeta de teléfono o de juego. Este proceso le da al espectador la esperanza de “ganar” algo especial, de tener suerte para lograr sus sueños y deseos.
