Paloma Todd
Although Puerto Rican artist Paloma Todd studied photography in Puerto Rico. she is an artist whose realistic graphite-pencil drawings are portraits of contemporary Afro-Caribbeans. This work is from a series of drawings created to raise awareness about the social and political plight of the islanders on the outlining municipality of Vieques in Puerto Rico. Vieques has been the location of international protests against the United States Navy and their use of the island as a bombing range and weapons testing ground. Todd objectifies the conflict as a personal issue both by the drawing’s title, El temor or Fear and by placing emphasis on the expression of pain. The facial expression of the individual appears to be on the verge of tears as the hand covers the eye to maybe shield her from something unseemly.

Paloma Todd, quien estudió fotografía en Puerto Rico, es una artista cuyos dibujos realistas en grafito son retratos de personas afro-caribeñas contemporáneas. Esta obra es parte de una serie de dibujos creada para fomentar conciencia sobre la situación social y política de los isleños en la municipalidad de Vieques en Puerto Rico. Vieques ha sido el lugar de protestas internacionales contra la marina de Estados Unidos y su uso de la isla como línea de bombardeo y lugar de experimentación de armas. Todd objetiviza el conflicto como un problema personal a través del título del dibujo, El Temor, así como poniendo énfasis en la expresión de dolor. El individuo parece estar al borde de las lágrimas y parece que al cubrirse con la mano el ojo se protege de algo que no vemos.
