Miguel Antonio Bonilla

Miguel Antonio Bonilla is especially recognized for his often comical and satirical criticisms of political corruption in Central America. The painting, The Knot, was created at the end of the civil war in El Salvador fought between 1980 and 1992. The image is of two dominant figures standing side by side connected by a red and white candy cane cord, in the reference to personal collusion. In many Latin American countries it has been common for corrupt politicians and military officials to conspire together to suppress the civil rights of individuals and to exercise political persecution and violence. This satirical but poignant work is a commentary on the corruption of military leaders and state governments that represent political oppression throughout the world.
