Fernando Botero

The voluminous figurative art style of Colombian artist Fernando Botero is unmistakable. As a young man, Botero had the opportunity to travel through Europe, studying classical European art from the Renaissance and Baroque period. Inspired by the academic European canons of classical beauty as well as references from his personal life and Latin American culture, in the 1960s Botero developed his signature style of rotund, slightly comic and satirical figures. As noted in his painting and sculpture, such as this massive bronze hand, Botero’s focus is first and foremost to represent beauty through form and volume. In the 1970s, Botero created a series of monumental sculptures, with the intent to bring his opulent figures into the third-dimension, further emphasizing their rich curves and alluring shapes. Botero never considers his figures “fat,” on the contrary, he considers his figures to reflect the essence of the Spanish word Hermosa, meaning both large and beautiful.
-----
