ARTIST LISTING

Alejandro Colunga

Alejandro Colunga was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1948 and is a self-taught artist. Throughout his career, he has established an idiosyncratic visual vocabulary filled with the influence of surrealism, folk art and cultural practice. He brings together the spirit of ancient legends found in popular Mexican culture, indigenous traditions and Catholic pomp and circumstance in his bizarre images of unknown figures depicted in bold colors and placed in mystical settings. He has been described as a “trickster” and satirist who takes classical themes and infiltrates them with foreign elements, such as shown in the depiction of this seemingly wizard caught in the rain. His art is a blending of the solemn and the absurd, and in this way, it celebrates the unique spirit of Mexico’s visual and oral traditions.
